My Tryst with the Internal Marking System

In my opinion, the system of internal marks vests a lot of power at the hands of the respective teachers and if they just are a little biased, improbable but possible, it can lead to blunders and loss in the number of human resources that we have available to us. But this is just one side of it. It might just fail to access the level of students in a universal competitive atmosphere. Let me try to explain this taking a fictional example:

Let’s, consider school 1 and school 2, 2 different schools located in 2 different parts of the country. School1 has a relatively better teacher as compared to school2. Therefore a relatively less talented student in school2 might get internally marked more as compared to a more talented student of school1, just because the teacher is better and so that teacher expects more from the student but because the student can’t produce the result expected out of the same he/she gets less with the internal marks. Now when the same students compete in a national exam, we might find that the student with the relatively lesser internal marks fares better. If our educational system did not have the system of internal marks perhaps we could get rid of the various entrance exams that students have to take even after they have cleared their respective board exams.

Coming back to the power vested in the teachers, many at times what happens is that certain students don’t have that good relationship with the teachers or they just are not good with “buttering” the teachers. Some students are just born rebels and like working in their own free space without interference but in vain for because if they don’t abide by what their teachers tell them they just might fail them in their internals. Therefore it leaves the students no choice but to adhere to what their teachers tell them to do. Well, the greatest problem is they just can’t walk out; they are not given a choice. Well, this would obviously destroy the personality of many students who just need to be taught in a different way. There might also be cases where some teachers might settle their personal grudges and therefore it just might not be fruitful for the system as a whole. In the end this just might lead to loss of good talent in particular fields. Because of so much power vested in the teachers' students might not be able to voice out their apathy towards the teacher. In other words, it will be a forceful respect towards the teachers rather than earned respect on the part of the teachers.  At the end of the day we need talented people not trained people, we need to innovate and not follow what others set forth.

To produce individuals having freedom of thought and decide in the most unbiased nature, it is very important to train them in an unbiased environment and inculcate in them secularist views and ideas. To increase the efficiency of our educational system it becomes very necessary to get rid of this internal marking system so as to be able to fairly filter students to their level of talents on a more universal level rather than the more local level. Many might say that there are many students who can’t fare well on a more universal platform but that is the point of it, if they are good they have to be good anywhere irrespective of the platform either local or universal.
